Stable Diffusion vs SDXL

SDXL is the next generation of Stable Diffusion, and the differences are structural rather than cosmetic. It generates natively at 1024x1024 rather than 512x512, uses a larger text encoder that follows longer prompts more faithfully, and composes multi-subject scenes with fewer anatomical failures. For most work it is simply the better model.

Where the older Stable Diffusion still earns its place is speed and a certain looseness. It generates faster, and its output has a rougher, more painterly quality that some people prefer for illustration and texture work. It is also more forgiving of short, vague prompts, where SDXL's stricter prompt following can produce something oddly literal.

Use Stable Diffusion when

  • You are iterating quickly through many ideas
  • You want a looser, more painterly quality
  • Your prompt is short and you want the model to fill in the gaps
  • Speed matters more than final resolution

Use SDXL when

  • You need the highest resolution available
  • Your prompt is long and specific and you want it followed
  • The scene has multiple subjects or complex composition
  • You are generating a final image rather than exploring

Frequently asked questions

Is SDXL always better?
No. It is better at resolution, composition and prompt adherence, which covers most use cases. Stable Diffusion is faster and has a looser quality that suits quick iteration and some illustration work.
Does SDXL need different prompts?
It rewards longer and more specific ones. SDXL's larger text encoder makes use of detail that the older model would ignore, so prompts that name lighting, composition and materials pay off more.
Which uses more of my credits?
Both count as one image against your quota on Dreamify. SDXL simply takes longer to generate because it is a larger model working at higher resolution.
