AI Background Generator
A background has one job, which is to be interesting without competing with whatever sits on top of it. That means low contrast within the image, no hard focal point, and a value range that stays either consistently dark or consistently light so overlaid text keeps its legibility.
This is the opposite of how most prompts are written. Instead of asking for a striking subject, ask for texture, gradient, and blur: "soft out of focus", "gentle gradient", "subtle grain", "even lighting". The result looks unremarkable on its own and works perfectly once your content is on top of it.

abstract soft gradient background, deep indigo to warm plum, subtle grain, no focal point, even and smooth, wide composition
out of focus bokeh lights on a dark background, warm amber tones, soft and dreamy, very low contrast, wide
subtle geometric mesh pattern, pale grey lines on off white, minimal, even coverage, low contrast, wide composition
blurred modern office interior, soft daylight, neutral tones, shallow depth of field, no distinct subject, video call backdrop
textured concrete wall with soft directional light, warm grey, fine grain, even tone, no focal point, wide
How to get better results
- Ask for "no focal point" and "low contrast". A background that draws the eye is a failed background.
- Choose a value direction: consistently dark for white text, consistently light for dark text. Mixed values make text unreadable somewhere.
- Words like "out of focus", "soft", "subtle" and "even" are what push the model into backdrop territory.
- Add "wide composition" for slides and websites, since the crop will almost always be landscape.
Best for
- Website hero sections
- Presentation and slide backdrops
- Video call backgrounds
- Social graphics and banners
Recommended model
Kandinsky produces smooth gradients and even color fields, which is exactly the quiet register a background needs.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I keep text readable over a generated background?
- Pick a background with a consistent value range and low internal contrast, then add a subtle dark or light overlay behind your text block. Backgrounds with bright and dark areas in the same image will always fail somewhere.
- Can I generate a wide banner?
- Add "wide composition" to the prompt and crop the result. Generating at the largest square size and cropping to a banner keeps more usable pixels than trying to force the ratio directly.
- Can I use these for a video call background?
- Yes. Blurred interior scenes work best, since the segmentation in video call software handles a soft, evenly-lit backdrop more gracefully than a busy one.
